Pittsburgh Penguins Game Used Goal Puck - Jussi Jokinen
Assisted by Malkin and Maatta
The puck was purchased through the Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins mystery GOALS charity bag.
The Penguins played the New York Rangers on May 13th, 2014 for the seven game of the second round of the playoffs. This Jokinen goal puck was the first and only goal of the game scored 4:15 into the second period. The assists were given to Evgeni Malkin and Ollie Maatta to tie the Rangers at 1-1. The goal puck tape has James Neal written as the assist instead of Malkin. The final scoring sheet showed Malkin with the assist not Neal. This would be the final Penguins goal of the 2013-14 season. Jokinen finished the 2014 playoffs with the most goals scored by a Penguin (7). He was also the third star of game seven.
The Pittsburgh Penguins finished with the best record in the Metropolitan division and second in the Eastern Conference during the regular season. The Pens had beat the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round 4 games to 2. In the second round, the Pens had a 3-1 lead on the Rangers in the best of 7 games. After losing the next two games, the Penguins returned to home to the Consol Energy Center for game 7. Despite the Penguins best effort, the Pens lost to the Rangers 2-1 for the Rangers to advance to the conference finals.
After blowing the 3-1 advantage in 7 games (3-4), the Penguins management fired Ray Shero two days later and named Jim Rutherford the next Penguins GM. Head coach Dan Bylsma, who won the 2009 Stanley Cup for the Penguins, was fired as well and replaced by Mark Johnston. Jim Rutherford also hired Mike Sullivan to the minor league team Wilkes Barre Scranton Penguins. Jim Rutherford made his first trade during the 2014 draft, trading James Neal to the Nashville Predators for Patric Hornqvist and Nick Spaling.
This 2014 final goal puck started a trickle effect with key moves that helped Penguins get back to the Stanley Cup finals and win back to back Cups in 2016 and 2017.
